Every time Susan throws a party, guests can't stop raving about her incredible food, relaxed attitude, and attention to creative detail. But for Susan and her husband, who recently built their dream home in Ballwin, it's all part of the package! "I love throwing parties and enjoying time with my friends and family!" says Susan. It seems that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree since Susan's daughter has taken on this role professionally as a gourmet chef. So when we asked Susan for some tips on a creating a rustic Cinco de Mayo celebration, she had no problem showering us with plenty of creative ideas. Susan's biggest piece of advice is "re-purpose". Serve or display things in containers people wouldn't normally expect them to be in. It's surprising and fun!
- Use your cowboy boot for a centerpiece. Choose flowers that can last a while without water and simply arrange them in the boot.
- Instead of the traditional margarita glass, serve drinks from jam jars.
- Forget your drink cooler — chill drinks in an interesting container like an antique copper pitcher.
- Welcome guests with a fun arrangement at the door: "the party starts here!"
- Add an extra few drops of lemon juice or an interesting garnish to store-bought salsa and guacamole.
- Great invitations are key to creating excitement and anticipation for a party.
- Cowboy hats for peanuts or chips? You bet!
- There's nothing like rope tied around napkins for a charming rustic detail.
